What is Plan B?

Plan B One-Step is an emergency contraceptive intended for use after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It contains 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone also used in birth control pills.

It works best when taken as soon as possible. The FDA recommends taking levonorgestrel emergency contraception within 72 hours and following the product directions exactly.

How does it work?

Plan B works before ovulation, usually by stopping or delaying the release of an egg from the ovary. Current evidence does not support a direct effect on fertilization or implantation.

Plan B does not work if you are already pregnant, will not affect an existing pregnancy, and is not the same as the abortion pill.
