Am I Eligible for the Abortion Pill

If you’re not trying to add to your family right now, an unplanned pregnancy can be daunting and overwhelming, leaving you scrambling as you try to find a plan that works for you.

Many women turn to the abortion pill as a possible solution, but, as with any important medical procedure, it’s important to understand all of the risks before choosing the best option for you.

Am I Eligible for the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks of gestational age (and abortion is only legal in Florida up to 15 weeks).

According to the Mayo Clinic, a medical abortion isn’t an option if you are too far along in your pregnancy. Some other conditions that could exclude you are:

  • Have an intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Have certain medical conditions
  • Take a blood thinner or certain steroid medicines
  • Can’t make follow-up visits to your provider or don’t have access to emergency care
  • Have an allergy to the medicine used

Medical abortion causes cramping and vaginal bleeding to complete the abortion. However, the level of both and feelings of discomfort will vary from person to person.

What are the Side Effects?

According to the Mayo Clinic, medical abortion may also cause:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

What Are the Risks?

The Mayo Clinic lists the following risks of medical abortion:

  • An ongoing unwanted pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort
